The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) is the curriculum mandated for all schools in the State of Texas. For more information on the TEKS, click here . Study of this curriculum prepares students to pass the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) which is given in the spring to students in the third through eleventh grades. Testing Calendar

The tests are important because students in some grades must pass specific tests to be promoted or to graduate--and because the Texas Education Agency rates schools based on test results.

TAKS promotion requirements are:
  • Fifth and eighth graders must pass Reading and Math to be promoted.
  • Students in high school must pass all portions--Algebra I, biology, English I, English II and U.S. history--to graduate. If a student fails, one or more subject-area tests, there are several opportunities to retake those tests prior to the scheduled date of graduation.
The 80th Legislature of the State of Texas passed a bill requiring fitness assessments for all students in grades 3-12 starting in the 2007-2008 school year. For more information, click on Fitnessgram.
