Student Admission
All children who are five years of age and under 21 years of age on or before the first day of September and are residents of Commerce ISD may attend Commerce Schools. Commerce ISD has boundaries which include some areas of Campbell, Wolfe City, Ladonia and Greenville. Students residing outside the district boundaries must have prior approval for admission through the superintendent’s office. See Out-of-district transfers below.
A child must be five years of age on or before September 1 to enroll in kindergarten or six years of age on the first day of school to enter first grade.
Entrance Requirements
To enroll in Commerce’s prekindergarten programs,
a child must be four years old,
unable to speak or comprehend the English language,
educationally disadvantaged or homeless.
A birth certificate or its equivalent is required for children entering prekindergarten, kindergarten or first grade. The most recent report card or grade transcript for those entering grades 2 through 12.
Other records required for all students include:
Immunization records
Proof of residence including a contract or a lease agreement and a recent utility bill
Social Security numbers are requested
Registration is handled at the school the child will be attending after summer on-site registration. A parent or guardian must accompany a child when registering.
Out-of-district transfers
Transfers for students living outside the district will be considered at any time. However, because we believe it is a privilege to attend school in Commerce the following are considerations for students wanting to transfer into Commerce ISD.
Requirements for attendance, academic achievement and conduct are as follows:
A transfer student’s absences will not be allowed to exceed 10 percent of the total days in a semester.
Satisfactory academic progress is defined as maintaining a 70 percent for each report card grading period and passing scores in all sections of the student’s state assessment, such as the TAKS/STAAR test.
Placement in the district’s Discipline Alternative Education Program (DAEP), expulsion, assignment to in-school suspension more than two times/days or assignment to out-of-school suspension more than two times/days are defined as serious or persistent misbehavior and will cause a transfer applicant to not be accepted and also revoke the transfer of a current student.
To apply for transfer into Commerce ISD, parents should obtain a transfer application at the CISD Administration Building at 3315 Washington St., Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Forms are also available online.
The following documents are required for transfer consideration: copy of birth certificate, current academic transcript (report card), current TAKS scores, copy of immunization records, attendance records, and a student’s most recent ARD/504/RTI information (if applicable).
