Revised calendar approved by Board

Under a newly adopted 2020-2021 CISD school calendar, students will begin school on August 4 and end on June 4.

Revised 2020-2021 calendar

The Commerce ISD Board of Trustees voted on June 15 to revise the 2020-2021 school calendar to include week-long breaks throughout the year to compensate for lost time due to possible  COVID-19 closures. Texas Governor Greg Abbott proposed a similar model in May to ensure schools can make up lost instructional time and have an extended break in the winter to inhibit the spread of COVID-19 in our schools.

The start date is one week earlier than the previous calendar and the end date is one week later. Winter/Christmas break is three weeks based on guidance from the CDC, the Governor, and the TAMU-C calendar. The calendar allows for COVID-19 recovery or detection after the busiest social interaction of the year.

Included are four intersession weeks which can be used as enrichment or test preparation for students as they prepare for the STAAR tests. ACE/Boys & Girls Club will be open during intersession weeks at no cost.

Teachers would only work one of the four intersession weeks.

Although a final decision was not made on changes to transportation because of the reduced number of passengers allowed on the buses, several options were presented and discussed. Staggered start times and only transporting students who lived at least one mile away from their school are being considered. Commerce ISD allows all students to ride a bus although the state only mandates students living at least two miles away are eligible to ride.

Until the CDC guidelines are lifted, administrators encourage parents to transport their own children to school to avoid extremely early pickups and late drop-off times
